A championship game that stretched nearly to midnight delivered one final unforgettable moment.
Top-seeded George Washington captured its first Class AAAA state baseball championship, outlasting Morgantown, 6-5, in a dramatic back-and-forth battle at Jack Cook Field.
The teams combined for five lead changes across seven innings as neither side could pull away. Morgantown took the lead three separate times, but the Patriots answered every challenge before scoring the decisive runs in the sixth inning.
Tournament MVP Luke Gordon continued his remarkable week with two hits, including the go-ahead RBI double that proved to be the championship-winning hit. Gordon finished the state tournament 7-for-9 with five RBIs.
Ryan Anderson starred on both sides of the ball, going 3-for-3 at the plate before striking out the final four batters he faced in 3.1 scoreless innings of relief to seal the victory.
George Washington's championship comes after runner-up finishes twice in the previous four seasons and caps a historic season for the Patriots.
