Sherman made history at Jack Cook Field.
Behind a complete-game performance from Brady Perdue, the Tide defeated Gilmer County, 4-1, to capture the first state baseball championship in school history.
The title-winning effort almost didn't happen. Head coach Jeremiah Pettrey revealed that Perdue wasn't originally scheduled to start, but a message from the senior the night before the game changed everything.
Perdue responded by tossing a complete game, allowing no earned runs while scattering six hits and striking out five. Combined with back-to-back semifinal and quarterfinal shutouts from Luke Tagliente, Sherman allowed just one run in three state tournament games.
The Tide built an early lead with two first-inning runs before adding insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Avery Skeens, Oliver Harless, and Perdue each played key roles offensively as Sherman completed its championship run.
Gilmer County, making its first state championship appearance since 2001, outhit Sherman 6-2, but the Tide's pitching and defense proved to be the difference.
The victory caps a historic season and delivers the first baseball state title to the community of Seth.
