Sports
The North Marion Huskies clinched the Class AA state championship in girls basketball, defeating Wyoming East 72-62 in a hard-fought contest. After a closely contested first three quarters, with ties at halftime and the end of the third, North Marion seized control in the fourth, primarily through an astonishing display of free-throw accuracy. Leah Parrish's crucial three-pointer early in the fourth provided the lead, but it was the team's near-perfect performance from the foul line that sealed the victory. Setting a state tournament record with 35 made free throws out of 36 attempts, including a flawless 20-for-20 in the final quarter, North Marion's exceptional shooting proved decisive. Taylor Buonamici, who also set an individual state tournament record with 21 made free throws, led the Huskies with 33 points. The game also featured a touching moment of sportsmanship, as Wyoming East's injured Gabby Lupardus was given the chance to shoot free throws, receiving a standing ovation from both sets of fans. Emily Saunders of Wyoming East set Class AA state tournament block records, and players from both teams, along with representatives from Frankfort and Wayne, were named to the all-tournament team.
