East Fairmont is heading to the WVSSAC Class AAA Girls Basketball State Championship Game after defeating Nitro in the semifinal round at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.
The Wildcats struck first as Karson Jones scored inside, giving Nitro an early lead. Jones finished with a dominant double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds, keeping the Wildcats within striking distance throughout the game.
East Fairmont quickly seized momentum late in the first quarter. Kailee Haymond scored off an assist from Kasey Rogers to cap an 8–0 run, helping the Bees take a 12–6 lead after the opening period.
Nitro responded early in the second quarter. Brooklyn Cawley found Bree Gibson for a basket as the Wildcats briefly tied the game at 12–12. But the Bees answered with another scoring surge, sparked by a corner three from Audrey Singer and a fast-break basket by Emma Moore, pushing East Fairmont ahead 20–12.
The Bees extended their lead before halftime when Mackenzie Shupe knocked down a three-pointer, giving East Fairmont a 26–18 advantage at the break.
East Fairmont carried that momentum into the second half. Shupe converted a steal into a layup, and Haymond turned defense into offense again as the Bees pushed the lead into double digits.
Nitro attempted to rally midway through the third quarter with baskets from Bree Gibson and Baylee Elkins, trimming the deficit to eight. However, East Fairmont responded with another strong run behind Emma Moore, who finished with a game-high 18 points.
The Bees built an 18-point lead by the end of the third quarter and controlled the game the rest of the way, securing a 52–44 victory.
With the win, East Fairmont advances to the WVSSAC Class AAA State Championship Game for the first time, where the Bees will face Greenbrier East for the state title.
