Parkersburg South delivered one of the biggest upsets of the WVSSAC Girls Basketball State Tournament, knocking off top-seeded George Washington in overtime to advance to the Class AAAA state championship game.
The semifinal matchup between Mountain State Athletic Conference rivals lived up to expectations from the opening tip at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.
Parkersburg South grabbed early momentum behind a 7-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Emily Owens, helping the Patriots take a 12-6 lead after the first quarter. South continued to pressure the Patriots in the second quarter as Quinn Bolyard converted a steal into a fast-break basket, while Grace Dodson added a three to keep the lead intact.
George Washington responded late in the half. Zykyra Myers scored on a put-back before Jariyah Pryor beat the halftime buzzer, trimming the deficit to 18-16 at the break.
GW briefly seized control early in the third quarter. Rayana Breckenridge opened the second half with five straight points, sparking a 9-0 run that gave George Washington its first lead of the game. Pryor continued the surge with a three-pointer as GW pushed its advantage to 26-20.
But Parkersburg South refused to go away. Owens helped keep the Patriots within striking distance, and Bolyard delivered in the clutch late in regulation. With under a minute remaining, Bolyard drilled a game-tying three-pointer to send the semifinal into overtime tied at 39-39.
South carried that momentum into the extra period. Lindsey Logston opened overtime with a steal and score, and moments later Bolyard connected on yet another three-pointer to cap a 13-0 run spanning the fourth quarter and overtime.
Bolyard finished with a game-high 18 points, leading Parkersburg South to a 51-43 overtime victory.
With the win, the Patriots advance to the WVSSAC Class AAAA state championship game, where they will face the winner of Morgantown vs. Parkersburg.
