Cabell Midland secured its sixth overall state softball championship, winning the first-ever WVSSAC Class AAAA title by defeating Jefferson 2-0. The Knights completed an undefeated postseason run, largely thanks to the dominant pitching performance of Audrea Watts, who struck out 14 batters in the championship game.
Cabell Midland's offense manufactured runs in the fifth and sixth innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Kalissa Hess scored on a throwing error after reaching base via a walk and advancing on a single by Nicole Harris. The Knights added an insurance run in the sixth when Watts hit an RBI single, scoring Ellie McCormill.
Jefferson's best scoring opportunity came in the top of the sixth when they loaded the bases, but Watts pitched her way out of the jam. Jersey Rummel pitched a complete game for Jefferson, allowing only four hits and one earned run.
Cabell Midland's head coach, Herman Beckett, praised his team's performance throughout the season and postseason, highlighting their tough schedule and Watts's exceptional pitching. Watts also expressed the significance of the win, especially after reaching the championship game in the previous three years without winning.
