The Winfield Generals (28-7) are on the cusp of securing their third straight state softball championship, after an impressive performance on Friday at the Class AAA state tournament in South Charleston, W.Va. The Generals notched two crucial victories: a 7-5 win against Herbert Hoover in their opener, followed by a 4-2 triumph over Weir in the winners' bracket final.
Despite challenging weather conditions, including a windstorm and steady rain, Winfield demonstrated resilience. Head coach Steve Hensley credited the team's preparedness to recent practices in similar adverse conditions.
In their game against Weir, the Generals broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning with Emeri Nelson's RBI single, followed by Nelson and Evie Loyd scoring on a throwing error. Additional runs came from Ava Robinson's run-scoring single in the fourth and Kenlie Zigmond's in the fifth.
Pitcher Mattie Carroll delivered her second complete game of the day, allowing only two hits and one earned run while striking out eight batters. She effectively navigated a bases-loaded situation in the third inning, with her performance improving as the game progressed. Ava Cole contributed two hits, and seven other Generals each recorded a base hit.
Weir (28-8) attempted a comeback with runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but ultimately fell short. Logan Barton had a run-scoring single in the sixth, and Braylee Lash scored on an error in the seventh. Eliza Utt pitched five innings for Weir, allowing two earned runs.
Having won consecutive Class AA state titles in 2023 and 2024 before moving up to Class AAA this season, Winfield now needs just one more win in two potential games on Saturday to claim the championship. They will face the winner of the elimination game between Frankfort and Weir.
