Shady Spring survived a one-run battle and advanced to the Class AAA state semifinals.
Tyler Wilhite delivered the game's biggest hit and then shut the door on the mound as the Tigers defeated Robert C. Byrd, 2-1, at the WVSSAC State Baseball Tournament.
Wilhite broke a scoreless tie with a two-run single in the second inning, providing all the offense Shady Spring would need. He later entered in relief and recorded the final nine outs, including escaping a late threat in the seventh inning with the tying run on base.
Sam Barnett started and tossed four strong innings before Wilhite finished the job. Both pitchers stayed under the pitch-count threshold and remain available for Friday's semifinal matchup.
Robert C. Byrd cut the deficit to one on an RBI double from Ashton Shaffer in the third inning, but could get no closer.
