George Washington High School secured a thrilling 47-46 victory over top-seeded Morgantown in the inaugural Class AAAA state championship game, thanks to a clutch pull-up jump shot from sophomore Ben Nicol in the final seconds. Despite trailing for much of the game, GW's resilience and late-game execution propelled them to victory. Nicol's game-winning shot, coupled with a crucial defensive stop, sealed the Patriots' third state title under coach Rick Greene. The game was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams exchanging leads and making key plays. Morgantown's Carson Poffenberger led his team with 17 points, but GW's Alex Yoakum and Nicol combined for 31 points, proving to be the difference. GW's strong shooting performance, particularly in the fourth quarter, and timely three-pointers allowed them to overcome Morgantown's defensive pressure. The Mohigans struggled with their outside shooting and couldn't convert on their final possession, leading to a heartbreaking loss. The Patriots' determination and Nicol's heroics capped off a dramatic championship victory.
