St. Marys captured the WVSSAC Class A Girls Basketball State Championship, defeating defending champion Gilmer County 45–35 in a showdown between Little Kanawha Conference rivals at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.
Gilmer County struck first as Ava Dobbins converted off a pass from Blair Dobbins to give the Titans an early lead. St. Marys answered quickly behind strong interior play from Anna Bennett, and a pair of early three-pointers from Landry Riggs helped keep the game tied at 10 after the first quarter.
The Blue Devils began to take control in the second quarter. Laney Watkins went coast-to-coast for a layup during a 10–2 St. Marys run, and Brynlee Bullock added a strong finish at the rim as the Blue Devils built an eight-point advantage. Gilmer County trimmed the deficit late in the half with a corner three from Lena Frymire, but Bullock’s putback just before the buzzer sent St. Marys to the locker room leading 22–16.
St. Marys pushed the lead to double digits in the third quarter when Bennett knocked down a baseline jumper, but the Titans stayed within striking distance. Laura Brannan scored five straight points, including a three-pointer, to cut the deficit to eight entering the fourth.
Gilmer County made one final push late in the game. A putback from Blair Dobbins and a clutch three from Frymire brought the Titans within three with under two minutes remaining.
But St. Marys closed the door. Riggs found Lauren Pritchett in transition, and Watkins added another driving layup as the Blue Devils finished the game on a 7–0 run.
Bullock led all scorers with 19 points, powering St. Marys to its first WVSSAC Class A state championship since 2013 with the 45–35 victory over Gilmer County.
