In each of the last four seasons, the Huntington Highlanders have faced off against the Martinsburg Bulldogs in the playoffs. Last season, the Highlanders' season ended with an 11-2 record, with both losses coming from Martinsburg, including a one-point defeat in the semifinal round. According to Huntington head coach Billy Seals, the team is motivated by the loss but is focused on the new season with a new group of players.

Senior Tayveon Wilson will transition from receiver to quarterback to fill the hole left by last year's graduates. Wilson believes playing quarterback will help him see the game from a different perspective, which will be valuable as he prepares to play a different position in college. Although the Highlanders have to fill several positions, they return several key players, including senior linemen Aryn McPherson and Marshall commit Mason Ramsey. The team also has strong players returning on defense, including two of the top four tacklers from last season, Ilias King and Bryce Winkfield. The Highlanders face a difficult schedule this season, with games against three defending state champions, including a Week 2 rematch against Martinsburg.
