Top-seeded George Washington advanced to the WVSSAC Class AAAA Girls Basketball State Tournament Semifinals, defeating Washington 65-52 in a quarterfinal matchup at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.
George Washington jumped out to an early advantage when Rayana Breckenridge raced to the hoop and converted through contact, sparking a strong opening run. The Patriots pushed their lead to double digits in the first quarter as Jauhi’a Pryor capped a 12-0 run, giving GW a 16-6 lead after the opening period.
The Patriots continued to build momentum in the second quarter behind Zakiyah Myers, who scored 11 points in the first half. Meanwhile, Mariah Johnson added a three-point play, helping George Washington extend its lead to 30-19 late in the half.
Washington High battled back behind Tamiya Perry, who delivered a strong performance with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Perry’s three-point play early in the third quarter helped spark a 9-0 run, pulling Washington within 33-30.
But George Washington responded with timely baskets from Pryor and Breckenridge to regain control. Breckenridge led the Patriots with 20 points, including a key three-pointer late in the third quarter that helped GW maintain a 46-37 lead entering the fourth.
In the final period, George Washington pulled away. Breckenridge added another three-point play, and Johnson knocked down a three-pointer during an 8-0 run that sealed the victory.
With the win, George Washington advances to the Class AAAA Semifinals, where the Patriots will face the winner of Martinsburg vs. Parkersburg South.
