James Monroe has established itself as one of West Virginia's most consistent playoff programs, and the Mavericks are looking to continue that success in 2026.

Head coach John Mustain has guided James Monroe to eight consecutive playoff appearances across his two stints with the program. The Mavericks finished 7-4 last season, marking their fifth straight year with at least seven victories.

Senior Jayden Miller is preparing to take over at quarterback, but his versatility could allow James Monroe to use multiple looks with Bentley McCroskey also competing for snaps. Bryce Gardiner and Kolton Dowdy headline a group of interchangeable offensive weapons as the Mavericks install new pieces around their experienced playmakers.

Up front, senior center Tyson Meadows will be counted on to lead a young offensive line, while junior Gus Cole returns after missing nearly all of last season with an injury.

James Monroe will be tested immediately with a challenging schedule featuring eight teams that reached the playoffs last season. But the Mavericks believe they have the talent to compete with the best teams in the state and make another deep postseason run.
