Tug Valley completes the three-peat.
In a hard-fought Class A State Championship showdown, Tug Valley overcame an early deficit to defeat Greater Beckley Christian, 64-54, securing its third consecutive state title and the fifth championship under head coach Garland “Rabbit” Thompson.
Greater Beckley Christian came out firing, as Iziah Gordon and Eli Gunter helped the Crusaders jump out to a 10-2 lead in the opening minutes. But Tug Valley responded behind Cameron Slone and a dominant performance from Braydun Ferris, who finished with a game-high 30 points.
The game tightened into a back-and-forth battle, tied at 25 at halftime after a momentum-swinging sequence from Javonte Spencer, who scored five points in five seconds for the Crusaders.
In the second half, Tug Valley took control. Ferris delivered in the biggest moments, including a clutch three-pointer midway through the fourth quarter to give the Panthers the lead for good. Slone and Preston May added key contributions down the stretch as Tug Valley pulled away late.
With the win, Tug Valley caps off another dominant season and cements its place among the state’s elite programs with a third straight championship.
