On Saturday, March 22, 2026, George Washington captured the Class AAAA state championship with a thrilling 64-58 double-overtime victory over Spring Mills at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.
Spring Mills came out strong early, using a 15-0 first-quarter run led by Akwasi Opoku-Achampong and Chase Jones to build a 17-5 lead. But George Washington responded in the second quarter with a 16-2 run of their own to take a 26-22 advantage into halftime.
The back-and-forth battle continued throughout the second half, as Dominic Sprouse delivered a breakout performance with a game-high 28 points, while Noah Lewis added 25 points, including multiple clutch plays late in regulation and overtime.
Spring Mills had chances to win, including a clutch three from Opoku-Achampong to force overtime and a late score from K'nes Stovall to push the game into a second extra period.
In double overtime, George Washington made the decisive plays. Kaden Welch gave the Patriots the lead with a key three-point play, and Lewis sealed the game with a steal and dunk as GW pulled away for the title.
With the win, George Washington secures its first state championship since 2021 and the fifth in program history.
