Morgantown Defeats Cabell Midland | WVSSAC AAAA Quarterfinal

The Morgantown Mohigans pulled away in the second half to defeat Cabell Midland 56-42 in the opening game of day three at the WVSSAC Girls Basketball State Tournament inside the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.
Morgantown wasted no time establishing control. Sydney Dusenbury scored back-to-back baskets early, and Maddie Ansel followed with a three-pointer as the Mohigans jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the opening minutes. Cabell Midland eventually got on the board behind Sophie Kelly, who finished with a team-high 16 points.
The Mohigans continued to build their advantage in the first quarter. Harper Messerly knocked down two three-pointers, helping Morgantown take a 15-4 lead after the opening period.
Cabell Midland attempted to rally in the third quarter. The Knights opened the second half with a 10-0 run, sparked by baskets from Braylin McGuire and Emma Smith, cutting the deficit to 27-22.
Morgantown answered with a strong response late in the third quarter. Malia Young provided a spark off the bench, scoring 10 points including a put-back that helped the Mohigans push the lead back to double digits.
In the fourth quarter, Messerly led Morgantown with 13 points, while Dusenbury and Ansel each added 11 points as the Mohigans maintained control down the stretch. Alyssa Tingler added a key basket on an inbound play to help seal the victory.
With the win, Morgantown advances to the WVSSAC Class AAAA semifinals, where the Mohigans will face the winner of University vs. Parkersburg.
