The James Monroe Mavericks are the WVSSAC Class AA Girls Basketball State Champions.
James Monroe delivered a dominant performance against Williamstown at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center, powered by an outstanding effort from Mya Dunlap.
Dunlap caught fire from the perimeter early, knocking down multiple three-pointers to help the Mavericks build a double-digit lead in the first quarter. Kendall Long added to the momentum with a buzzer-beating transition layup that pushed James Monroe ahead by 13 after the opening frame.
Williamstown responded with outside shooting from Gracie Montgomery and a three-pointer from Arissa Burt, while Quinn Bunch worked to create offense for the Yellow Jackets.
But James Monroe continued to control the game behind the chemistry of the Dunlap sisters, as Mya Dunlap connected on more shots from deep while Lydia Dunlap finished inside off a perfect pass.
The Mavericks’ defense sealed the victory late as Mya Dunlap recorded a big block that led to another fast-break score from Kendall Long.
After a 24-year wait, James Monroe reclaimed the top spot in Class AA as the Mavericks celebrated their 26th state championship in program history.
