In a season defined by uncertainty, Musselman’s Blake Hartman proved to be a constant force, delivering one of the most productive careers in West Virginia high school football and earning the 2020 MetroNews Football Player of the Year award. Despite playing only eight games, the senior tailback rushed for 1,835 yards and scored 35 touchdowns, leading the Applemen to a 7–1 record and a No. 3 playoff seed before their postseason run was cut short by COVID-19 restrictions. Hartman became the state’s all-time scoring leader with 748 career points and tied the career touchdown record at 118, showcasing his powerful downhill running style and offseason physical development. A three-time first-team all-state selection known for his work ethic, leadership, and continuous improvement, Hartman delivered standout performances against top competition, including five touchdowns against Martinsburg and a 261-yard, multi-score effort against Hurricane. Also a standout student with a 4.5 GPA and numerous Ivy League and Patriot League offers, Hartman earned 11 of 16 first-place votes to secure the Player of the Year honor, cementing his legacy as one of West Virginia’s most complete and accomplished prep athletes.
