The Chapmanville Tigers are one victory away from reaching the state tournament after defeating the Winfield Generals 2-0 in the opening game of their Class AAA Region IV best-of-three series.
The win was highlighted by a dominant pitching performance from Chapmanville senior Chloe Murphy, a UVA-Wise commit. Murphy threw a two-hit shutout, striking out 16 batters without issuing any walks. At one point, she retired 11 consecutive batters via strikeout and 19 consecutive batters between the first and seventh innings.
The game's only runs came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Chapmanville's No. 9 batter, Madalyn Farley, hit a two-out single to center field, scoring Evy Altizer and Peyton Lusk. Chapmanville outhit Winfield 5-2.
Chapmanville head coach Ronnie Otten praised Murphy's battling performance and expressed disappointment that no in-state schools recruited her. He also commended Farley for her timely hitting.
For Winfield, the two-time defending state champions, Mattie Carroll pitched a complete game, allowing one walk and striking out three.
The series now moves to Winfield for the second game on Tuesday. If a third game is necessary, it will be hosted by Chapmanville on Wednesday.
