It is very rare when a weekend of four high school football state championship games doesn’t produce at least one “instant classic”! Well, how about a weekend that produces three – that’s right – three legitimate games that, are without question, “Instant Classics”! That is what the state of WV was treated to this past weekend in Charleston! The 2025 State High School Football Championships kicked off at Noon, Friday, December 5th, and the Morgantown Mohigans defeated the Martinsburg Bulldogs, who had won the last two Class AAAA titles, by a final score of 28-21. Just seven hours later, in the only game that appeared, by the final score, to be a runaway, the Maroon Knights of Wheeling Central knocked off the Cee-Bees of Clay Battelle, 56-34. Then, came Saturday, December 6th, and at high Noon, the Class AA defending state champs Frankfort Falcons outlasted the Bluefield Beavers by scoring with just a few seconds left in the 4th quarter and winning by a final of 49-42. Then came the nightcap on Saturday night at 7 and we all knew this game was destined to be the best game of the four, and it did not disappoint. With just seconds left in the game, the Princeton Tigers’ defensive unit came up with the biggest stop of the tournament as they knocked down a 2-point conversion pass attempt in the endzone that locked down a 36-35 Princeton victory. With that effort, the Tiger’s won their first football championship in school history! The four championship games had a difference in scoring between the winning and losing teams of an average of just 9 points per game! The last time it was that close, was 12 years ago in 2013!
So, a tournament that offered four exciting games and featured way too many outstanding individual performances to list here means only one thing - MetroNews Networks must talk about it! Join Fred Persinger, Dave Jecklin and Joe Brocato this Wednesday night, December 10th from 7p to 9p on MetroNews TV for a live two-hour edition of High School Sportsline as we visit with all four of the winning head coaches, plus talk with some of the players that had those memorable performances!
