One of the biggest games of the 2026 West Virginia high school football regular season takes center stage as unbeaten Martinsburg visits unbeaten defending Class AAAA state champion Morgantown.
Both programs enter Week 7 at 5-0, setting up a rematch of the 2025 Class AAAA state championship between two teams that have looked every bit like title contenders through the first half of the season.
The recent history between these programs only adds to the stakes. Martinsburg dominated the 2025 regular-season meeting, defeating Morgantown 34-6. But when the teams met again with a state championship on the line, the Mohigans flipped the script. Morgantown defeated Martinsburg 28-21 to capture its first state championship since 2005 and snap the Bulldogs’ run of 11 consecutive victories in state championship games.
Morgantown has carried that momentum into 2026. The Mohigans are 5-0 and have outscored their opponents 228-39, averaging more than 45 points per game while allowing fewer than eight. Their start includes wins over Parkersburg, Jefferson, Hedgesville, Spring Mills and Wheeling Park, with Morgantown entering this matchup following a 47-7 victory over the Patriots.
Junior quarterback Maddox Twigg remains at the center of the Morgantown offense. The reigning J.R. House Award winner accounted for 316 total yards and four touchdowns in last year’s championship victory over Martinsburg. He enters the rematch after throwing for 240 yards and three touchdowns while adding another score on the ground against Wheeling Park.
Junior running back Lyric Blake gives the Mohigans another major weapon, entering the matchup with 496 rushing yards and nine total touchdowns. Together, Twigg and Blake have helped Morgantown remain unbeaten as the Mohigans pursue back-to-back state championships for the first time since 2004 and 2005.
Martinsburg arrives in Morgantown with an equally dominant start. The Bulldogs are 5-0 and have outscored opponents 257-28, averaging more than 51 points per game while allowing fewer than six. Martinsburg has already posted three shutouts and owns a 35-21 road victory over Bridgeport, another of the state’s premier programs. The Bulldogs enter Week 7 after consecutive wins of 52-0 over Jefferson and 61-0 over Musselman.
Senior quarterback Brian Dick leads the Martinsburg offense. Through five games, Dick has thrown for 936 yards and 12 touchdowns while also providing a major threat on the ground. He was dominant in the win over Musselman, rushing for 171 yards and three touchdowns while throwing for 202 yards and two more scores.
Senior receiver Boston Todd gives the Bulldogs another explosive option, averaging more than 72 receiving yards per game and accounting for 10 total touchdowns as part of a Martinsburg offense capable of attacking defenses in multiple ways.
The matchup also brings together two of the state’s premier programs and coaching staffs. Dave Walker has built Martinsburg into the defining dynasty of modern West Virginia high school football, while Sean Biser and Morgantown broke through last season by beating the Bulldogs for the Mohigans’ first state title in two decades.
Now they meet again.
Martinsburg is looking to avenge last season’s championship loss and reassert itself atop Class AAAA. Morgantown is trying to prove its title run was the start of something sustained. Both teams are undefeated. Both have championship expectations. And with the second half of the regular season underway, this matchup could help shape the Class AAAA postseason picture.
Watch Martinsburg at Morgantown live from Pony Lewis Field at Morgantown High School on Friday, October 9. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on MetroNews Television.
