Cabell Midland reclaimed “The Shield” with a 35-14 victory over Huntington, earning its first win in the rivalry since 2023.
Junior quarterback Logan Shull threw three touchdown passes, while freshman running back Rajan Thompson scored three times as the Knights improved to 8-1.
Thompson opened the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run before catching a 60-yard touchdown pass from Shull in the second quarter.
Huntington answered with a 1-yard touchdown run from Donte Newsome, but Cabell Midland delivered a critical response just before halftime. Shull connected with Carson Christian for a 48-yard touchdown with 48 seconds remaining, giving the Knights a 21-7 lead.
The same duo struck again just over a minute into the second half, this time on a 72-yard touchdown that pushed Midland’s advantage to three scores.
Huntington quarterback Marek Midkiff later found Johnny Garrett for a 16-yard touchdown, but Cabell Midland’s defense shut the Highlanders down the rest of the way. Eli Thompson and Keian Shelton each recorded interceptions for the Knights.
Head coach Eric Fetty praised Shull’s ability to make Huntington pay through the air after the Highlanders limited him in the running game, while the Midland defense contained Huntington’s RPO attack and limited explosive plays.
For Cabell Midland, this one meant more than another win. The Knights take back “The Shield,” improve to 8-1 and strengthen their position in the WVSSAC playoff ratings.
