Class AA No. 3 Petersburg used a pair of clutch home runs and late insurance runs to defeat Class AAA No. 4 Keyser, 9-7, in a battle between two of West Virginia’s top softball teams.
Trailing 2-1 in the fifth inning, the Vikings exploded for eight unanswered runs, highlighted by home runs from Lacey Moyers, Miley Tingler, and Ella Markwell. Tingler’s three-run blast gave Petersburg the lead for good, while Markwell’s two-run homer in the seventh helped stretch the advantage to 9-2.
Keyser refused to go quietly, rallying for five runs in the bottom of the seventh after Petersburg starter Gracie Carpenter exited with an injury. But Moyers came in relief and shut the door to preserve the win.
Petersburg improves to 20-3, becoming just the third team in West Virginia to reach the 20-win mark this season.
