Bluefield continued its turnaround with a major 22-13 victory over No. 2 Independence at Mitchell Stadium.
After opening the season 0-2, the No. 4 Beavers have now won three straight games while showing significant improvement on defense. Bluefield allowed 72 points over its first two contests but has surrendered just 29 during its three-game winning streak.
The Beavers never trailed against Independence. Jeremiah Jones opened the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run before Patriots quarterback Brock Green connected with Carson Treadway for an 18-yard score.
Bluefield answered immediately when Max Simpson found Jazhaun Brown for a 15-yard touchdown, giving the Beavers a 16-7 halftime advantage.
Simpson added another touchdown pass early in the second half, connecting with Jamarius Smith from 10 yards out to extend the lead to 22-7.
Independence responded with another Green-to-Treadway touchdown, but Bluefield's defense came up with several critical stops in the fourth quarter, including a red-zone stand with just over three minutes remaining.
The Beavers also overcame an early injury to Willis Wilson, with Brown, Jones and Smith helping carry the offensive load while Independence focused additional coverage on Pax Calhoun.
Hear from head coach Fred Simon on Bluefield's defensive improvement, the emergence of additional offensive weapons and what this win means after a difficult start to the season.
