The Matchup and Martinsburg’s Dynasty
West Virginia’s premier high school football program, the Martinsburg Bulldogs, travels to University of Charleston Stadium this Friday seeking a third consecutive state title and their 12th championship since 2010. The season began unusually for the Bulldogs, who dropped their first two games to powerhouse teams from Huntington and New Jersey. However, 10-time champion head coach Dave Walker used the slow start to refocus the team's practice habits and attitude. Martinsburg enters the final with a deep roster, led by junior quarterback Brian Dick (2,947 yards, 41 total TDs) and versatile playmakers like Boston Todd and the running back duo of Kevin Myers and Kingston McDonald-Gibson.
Morgantown’s Resurgence
Opposing them are the Morgantown Mohigans, who have secured their first state title game appearance since 2005. Under sixth-year head coach Sean Biser, the program has increased its win total for five consecutive seasons, culminating in a semifinal victory over Jefferson. The Mohigans are led by sophomore Division I prospect Maddox Twigg, a quarterback who has accounted for 3,086 total yards and 41 touchdowns this season. He is supported by an emerging group of skill players, including Carter Cooper and Jayden Smalls, who have been integral to the team's offensive success.
The Rematch
This game serves as a rematch of an October 10th contest in which Martinsburg defeated Morgantown 34-6. Despite the lopsided regular-season score, Coach Walker believes the result was misleading due to Morgantown's injuries at the time and expects a much tougher contest now that the Mohigans are healthy. Coach Biser acknowledges the challenge, noting that to defeat a well-coached Martinsburg squad, his team must play a "clean game," avoiding penalties and executing tackles effectively to reverse the previous outcome.
