WVU tunes up for season opener with win over Fairmont State
Sports
In their lone preseason exhibition, the West Virginia women's basketball team defeated Fairmont State 95-43, utilizing a defense that forced 37 turnovers. Five Mountaineers scored in double figures, led by senior guard Sydney Woodley, who posted 15 points and 5 steals. WVU established a 48-26 halftime lead over the defending Mountain East Conference champions and, remarkably, did not allow a single field goal in the second half. However, the game was slowed by excessive fouling, as the teams combined for 58 fouls and 77 free-throw attempts, which head coach Mark Kellogg acknowledged they "will work on." Carter McCray and Sydney Shaw each added 14 points for WVU, while Gabbie Reep led Fairmont State with 15 points.
