Despite clinching the Big 12 regular season championship just two days earlier, the WVU baseball team suffered a 7-0 defeat against Kansas, completing a series sweep by the Jayhawks in Granville. This loss marks WVU's fourth consecutive defeat, a season-long losing streak, as they head into the postseason.
Kansas pitchers held WVU to just two hits while striking them out ten times, marking the second time in the series the Mountaineers were shut out. While WVU trailed only 1-0 heading into the eighth inning, Kansas's offense erupted for six runs over the final two frames against the WVU bullpen. A three-run homer by Derek Cerda in the eighth inning was a key blow.
Despite the loss, WVU starting pitcher Jack Kartsonas delivered a strong performance, allowing only one run on five hits over seven innings while striking out eight. Head coach Steve Sabins praised Kartsonas as a "warrior." Kansas starter Kannon Carr earned the win.
Following the game, WVU (40-13, 19-9 Big 12) was presented with the Big 12 regular season championship trophy. Coach Sabins acknowledged Kansas (42-14, 20-10 Big 12) as a "good team" and emphasized the importance for his players to "turn the page" and compartmentalize the regular season success as they prepare for the conference tournament. Catcher Logan Sauve echoed this sentiment, stating, "At the end of the day, we are Big 12 champs." Sabins also expressed gratitude for the supportive fans who stayed for the ceremony.
As the No. 1 seed, WVU will begin play in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Conference Tournament at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. They will face the winner of the game between the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds.
