East Hardy remained unbeaten with a 34-27 victory over Moorefield in an emotional edition of the annual Hardy Bowl.
The game was delayed three days following the passing of Moorefield football staff member Jacob Metheny, whose son Edison Metheny is a team captain for the Yellow Jackets. Edison scored a touchdown and recorded an interception as both communities came together around the Metheny family.
On the field, East Hardy leaned on a strong second-half defensive effort and a huge performance from Nehemiah Graham.
The teams traded touchdowns throughout the first half. Trevor Roof connected with Brinn Childers for a 63-yard touchdown to open the scoring, and the duo struck again from 10 yards out just before halftime to pull the Cougars within 21-20.
Moorefield answered with rushing touchdowns from Edison Metheny, Bill Lewis and Keysean Washington to take a one-point lead into the break.
East Hardy’s defense tightened up after halftime, and Graham took over in the fourth quarter. He broke free for a 53-yard touchdown run to give the Cougars the lead before adding an 18-yard score late to extend the advantage to 34-21.
Lewis responded with a 54-yard touchdown for Moorefield, but East Hardy held on to improve to 7-0.
Hear from head coach Devon Orndorff on the emotional circumstances surrounding the Hardy Bowl, East Hardy’s halftime adjustments and Graham’s continued development into one of the Cougars’ top playmakers.
