The West Virginia University football team is facing a significant depth crisis, particularly at running back, following a season-ending injury to star player and Preseason All-Big 12 selection Jahiem White. The Mountaineers, who had already tried to bolster their thin backfield by adding players like Tye Edwards and Andre Devine before the season, must now find a replacement for their leading rusher from the past two years. Head coach Rich Rodriguez indicated that several players will get an opportunity to fill the void, including Clay Ash, who has been the primary backup, the speedy Cyncir Bowers, and redshirt freshman Diore Hubbard. The team is also hopeful for the return of injured transfer Kannon Katzer.
WVU's injury issues are not limited to the running back position, as starting wide receiver Jaden Bray also suffered a season-ending foot injury. On a more optimistic note, an injury to linebacker Reid Carrico is considered day-to-day. The team is also navigating the complex debut of defensive lineman Jimmori Robinson, a former conference defensive player of the year who was recently cleared after an eligibility dispute but must complete a five-day acclimatization period before he can play. As the Mountaineers prepare for their upcoming Backyard Brawl against Pitt, they are forced to find new contributors to step into these critical roles on both sides of the ball.
