In the season opener marking Rich Rodriguez's second stint as head coach, West Virginia overcame a rash of turnovers to defeat Robert Morris 45-3. The Mountaineers' offense struggled mightily in the second quarter, losing three fumbles in a span of just four plays, which allowed the Colonials to enter halftime trailing only 10-3. However, the WVU defense was dominant all afternoon, holding Robert Morris to a mere 123 total yards and preventing them from ever reaching the end zone. After the sloppy start, West Virginia's offense found its footing in the second half, pulling away to secure a comfortable victory in what Coach Rodriguez called a game they would "take the win and learn from."
