Wheeling Central Catholic delivered a dominant performance against Nitro, rolling to a 48-7 victory in the MetroNews Television Game of the Week.
Dustin Sanner powered the Maroon Knights’ rushing attack, finishing with 111 yards and three touchdowns on just 11 carries as Central controlled the game on the ground.
Freshman Wyatt Stephens also broke free for a touchdown as Wheeling Central steadily built its advantage. Stephens finished with 53 rushing yards while recording the first rushing touchdown of his varsity career.
The Maroon Knights were just as impressive defensively. Brady Ernest intercepted two passes, including a pick-six, while Will Wear added another interception as Central forced three Nitro turnovers through the air.
Nico Kusic directed the Wheeling Central offense as the defending Class A champions continued their midseason surge. After opening the year 1-3, the Maroon Knights have now won three consecutive games and improve to 4-3.
Nitro produced one of its biggest highlights when Nysiaha Walker made a spectacular one-handed catch to set up the Wildcats’ lone touchdown, but Wheeling Central’s defense controlled the remainder of the matchup.
The 48-7 victory gives the Maroon Knights another convincing win as they continue their push toward the Class A postseason.
