Freshman Isaac Van Meter delivered the game-winning hit in extra innings after also pitching five strong innings, leading Moorefield to its third state title.
Moorefield jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning, but Wheeling Central answered with three runs of its own, taking advantage of early opportunities to keep the game tied.
The game remained deadlocked until the eighth inning, when Moorefield broke through for the decisive run. Junior Derek Hoyt closed out the game with three strong innings of relief to secure the championship.
The victory marked Moorefield’s third state championship, adding to titles in 2002 and 2009.
