Nitro captured its first girls basketball state championship with a 51–45 upset victory over previously undefeated Fairmont Senior in the Class AAA final.
The Wildcats showed incredible resilience after losing star senior Baylee Goins to a torn ACL in the second quarter, battling back after trailing at halftime.
Taylor Maddox led all scorers with 17 points, while Lena Elkins delivered a perfect shooting performance and Danielle Ward added key plays down the stretch.
Nitro’s defense and clutch fourth-quarter execution proved decisive as the Wildcats closed out one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.
Fairmont Senior entered undefeated, but struggled with shooting and turnovers late as Nitro completed the historic win.
