Led by a standout performance from junior guard Jayce Sammons, the Wayne Pioneers secured a 73-57 victory over Buffalo, extending their winning streak to seven games. Sammons, who entered the contest averaging over 27 points per game, delivered a game-high 31 points, 19 of which fueled a dominant first-half performance. After a tightly contested first quarter that ended in an 18-18 tie, the 2025 Class AAA state champions broke the game open with a 24-point surge in the second quarter. This offensive explosion was powered by Wayne’s proficiency from beyond the arc, as the team connected on 11 total three-pointers to dismantle Buffalo’s defensive schemes and establish a 42-31 lead by halftime.
Beyond Sammons' scoring, the Pioneers showcased a balanced offensive attack and disciplined defensive adjustments. Jaycee Mills contributed 18 points, including four three-pointers, while Lexi Blankenship and Megan Thompson added 11 and 10 points respectively. Head coach Wade Williamson credited the team's ability to punish "junk defenses" with outside shooting, which allowed the Pioneers to find an offensive rhythm. Defensively, Wayne tightened its grip in the second half, holding the Bison to just nine points in the third quarter to build a 20-point cushion. Despite a 22-point effort from Buffalo’s Brooke Woods and 10 points from Anna Boggess, the Bison (10-4) could not overcome the Pioneers' momentum, as Wayne improved its season record to 13-3.
