West Virginia (2-6) suffered another slow start but battled back, ultimately falling 23-17 to TCU (6-2) at home. The Mountaineers failed to gain a first down on their first three drives and fell behind 20-7 by halftime, marking their sixth straight game without a first-quarter point. Despite the deficit, true freshman quarterback Scotty Fox Jr. had his most promising performance, finishing with 301 passing yards, and the team showed improved effort from their previous loss. A 28-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Weimer cut the lead to 23-17 with 3:15 remaining, but TCU recovered the ensuing onside kick. The Horned Frogs then sealed the victory on a third-and-6 play when quarterback Josh Hoover connected with Eric McAlister for 21 yards; although McAlister fumbled, a teammate recovered the ball, allowing TCU to run out the clock. Head coach Rich Rodriguez lamented the costly start and an inability to run the ball (just 41 rushing yards) or convert key downs (5-of-21 on 3rd/4th down), stating, "You couldn’t play much worse [at the start]."
