Underclassmen to occupy key roles as Williamstown remains a 'work in progress'

The Williamstown Yellowjackets football team is entering its preseason with a robust roster of nearly 50 players, a strong showing for a Class AA school, though three-quarters of them are underclassmen. Head coach Chris Beck acknowledges the challenge of filling the void left by four All-State seniors, but sees it as a significant opportunity for the younger players, particularly the 36 freshmen and sophomores. While they are young, senior players like Carson Haines note their dedication to learning the offense and defense, anticipating team cohesion later in the season.
The team's success hinges on the development of players on both the offensive and defensive lines, as well as middle linebackers, areas of particular concern for Coach Beck. Sophomore Breck Allen will step in as the new starting quarterback, following in the footsteps of previous ballboys who have risen through the ranks. The Yellowjackets will rely on key returning seniors for offensive production, including leading rusher Jackson Kerr and leading receiver Carson Haines, both of whom have shown significant improvement. Senior Jenner Burge, the leading returning tackler, will also be transitioning to a new role at tight end to bolster both the running and passing games.
Despite a young roster, Williamstown faces a challenging schedule, with nine of their ten opponents having .500 or better records and eight making the playoffs last year. The Yellowjackets, who have reached at least the state semifinals every year since 2018, finishing 10-3 last season, are embracing the tough early-season matchups against James Monroe, Wheeling Central, and Roane County as a crucial test to gauge their progress.
